The Birkman method
The Birkman method is a scientifically well-founded method for mapping preferences, needs and possible stress points. This method provides insight into four essential elements of each person: motivation, self-perception, social perception and mindset. Anyone who understands these elements and their functioning will gain insight into their behaviour and those of others. Experience shows that mapping one’s own perception and that of others and sharing profiles is crucial for both one’s own performance and that of a team or broader organisation. Insight into needs is the key to motivation and working in balance.
The Birkman method is based on a questionnaire with more than 265 questions. This creates a profile that consists of components such as the interests of the person in question, their own effective behavioural style, their personal needs, and their behaviour in stressful situations, and it offers opportunities to function more effectively. According to Birkman, someone’s most optimal behavioural style can only be expressed if their personal needs and interests are met. Only in this way can someone develop. When these needs and interests are not met, someone can become frustrated and show stressful behaviour.
The Birkman method measures nine components:
– Social energy
– Physical energy
– Emotional energy
– Shyness
– Directiveness
– Persistence
– Rewards
– Restlessness
– Decision-making
These nine components can then be placed in 4 quadrants in the Birkman Map, which makes it immediately visible what someone’s characteristics are.
Birkman is, therefore:
- Useful for personal and team development and, therefore, a good basis for a training or coaching trajectory
- Given the scientific foundation, it can also be used for selection and team composition
